Currently Reading. . . The Host

The Host

by Stephenie Meyer

"Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away.

Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves—Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love." [stepheniemeyer.com]

I am in love with this book! I put off reading it for over a year; thinking there was no way it could measure up to the Twilight Saga. However, I am now hoping that Stephenie Meyer will be putting out more books soon! She once again proves that she is a natural born storyteller with the capability to get you so emotionally involved in the stories she weaves that you think about them long after you're done reading. Don't miss out on The Host!

good things come to those who wait. . .

TwilightMoms.com has news on a NEW book in the Mortal Instruments series! We all thought it was over, but Cassandra Clare (author of the Mortal Instruments) will be releasing a 4th book in the series that follows Clary's friend Simon... here's the story:

"A group of our New York TwilightMOMS attended a Cassandra Clare book signing yesterday. Cassandra is the author of The Mortal Instruments Series that we’ve featured as our Book of the Month. The third book City of Glass was published last March and we all thought that it was the last book in the series but we were wrong. Our Moms that were at the book signing today were the first to hear that Cassandra is writing a 4th book in the series. Yes, you read that correctly!!! (Go ahead, do a happy dance. I know I did!) The book is titled City of Fallen Angels and is scheduled to be published in March of 2011.

Here’s the press release that the NY Moms received yesterday-

New York, NY, August 24, 2009—Margaret K. McElderry Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, has acquired City of Fallen Angels, a fourth book in Cassandra Clare’s bestselling young adult fantasy series, The Mortal Instruments, which has over 1 million books in print. The story follows Simon, a character from the first three Mortal Instruments novels, City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass, as he adjusts to life as a vampire. City of Fallen Angels will publish in hardcover in March 2011, followed by a paperback edition in July 2012.

Love, blood, betrayal and revenge — the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels. Simon Lewis is having some trouble adjusting to his new life as a vampire, especially now that he hardly sees his best friend Clary, who is caught up in training to be a Shadowhunter—and spending time with her new boyfriend Jace. Not to mention that Simon doesn’t quite know how to handle the pressure of not-quite-dating two girls at once. What’s a daylight-loving vampire to do? Simon decides he needs a break and heads out of the city—only to discover that sinister events are following him. Realizing that the war they thought they’d won might not yet be over, Simon has to call on his Shadowhunter friends to save the day — if they can put their own splintering relationships on hold long enough to rise to the challenge.

“Simon has always been one of my favorite characters to write about, and I’m excited to get the chance to tell his story while revisiting some of the other characters that I love form The Mortal Instruments series,” said Cassandra Clare. “The enthusiasm for telling Simon’s story that I’ve received from the team at McElderry Books and Simon & Schuster has been great and I’m excited to be working with them to bring a fourth book to the series.”

In addition to the news about the 4th Mortal Instruments book it was also announced yesterday that graphic novel versions of the books are in the works and that the film rights to the books have been obtained by Unique Features. You get read more about all of these announcements on Cassandra Clare’s blog . . . " [AmyO]

Italian for Beginners

Italian for Beginners by Kristin Harmel

"Thirty-four-year-old Manhattan accountant Cat Connelly has always lived life on the safe side. But after her little sister gets married, Cat wonders if she has condemned herself to a life of boredom by playing by the rules. She decides to take a chance for once, accepting an invitation to spend a month with an old flame in Italy. But her reunion with the slick and gorgeous Francesco is short-lived, and she finds herself suddenly alone in Rome. Now, she must see if she has the courage to live outside the lines for the first time - and to face a past she never understood. It will take an unexpected friendship with a fiery Italian waitress, a whirlwind Vespa tour of the Eternal City with a handsome stranger, and a surprise encounter with an old acquaintance to show Cat that life doesn't always work out the way you expect, but sometimes you have to have fall in order to fly. [amazon.com]"

Kristin has become one of my favorite authors. Her previous releases, How to Sleep with a Movie Star and The Art of French Kissing, were both charmingly funny in a way that makes you want to read them again and again. Italian for Beginners follows closely in their footsteps. The book maybe had too many possible romantic interests in it when I already knew who I wanted Cat to end up with; however, each relationship is fun and entertaining in it's own right. If you're looking for a cute "chick lit" read with a little more wit and depth than you're used to in this genre- pick up any of these Kristin Harmel novels!

Currently Reading... The Mortal Instruments

by: Cassandra Clare

::thousand years ago, the Angel Raziel mixed his blood with the blood of men and created the race of the Nephilim. Human-angel hybrids, they walk among us, unseen but ever-present, our invisible protectors.

They call themselves Shadowhunters.

The Shadowhunters obey the laws set down in the Gray Book, given to them by the angel: their mandate is to protect our world from the interdimensional parasites they call demons, who travel from world to world, razing and destroying everything in their path. Theirs is also the task of keeping the peace among the warring Downworlders: the human-demon crossbreeds we know as warlocks, vampires, werewolves, and faeries.

In their duties they are aided by the mysterious Silent Brothers. Their lips and eyes sewn shut, the Silent Brothers rule over the City of Bones, the necropolis below the streets of Manhattan that holds the dead bodies of slain Shadowhunters. The Silent Brothers keep the archival records of ever Shadowhunter ever born. They also watch over the Mortal Instruments, the three divine objects the Angel Raziel gave to his children. One is a sword. One is a mirror. And the last is a cup.

For a thousand years, the Nephilim have protected the Mortal Instruments. But that was before the Uprising, the civil war that almost tore the Shadowhunters' secret world apart. Though Valentine, the Shadowhunter who started the war, is long dead, the wounds it left behind have never healed.

Fifteen years have passed since the Uprising. It's August in New York; the streets blistering with heat. Rumors run rampant through Downworld that Valentine is back, at the head of an army of Forsaken warriors.

And the Mortal Cup has gone missing...::

A Great new Series by Susan May Warren:

The PJ Sugar Series
Nothing But Trouble (#1)

Summary:  "It's not fair to say that trouble happens every time PJ Sugar is around, but it feels that way when she returns to her home town, looking for a fresh start. Within a week, her former teacher is murdered and her best friend's husband is arrested as the number-one suspect. Although the police detective investigating the murder—who also happens to be PJ's former flame—is convinced it's an open-and-shut case, PJ's not so sure. She begins digging for clues in an effort to clear her friend’s husband and ends up reigniting old passions, uncovering an international conspiracy, and solving a murder along the way. She also discovers that maybe God can use a woman who never seems to get it right. "March" into the Bookstore

by: Beverly Lewis
release date: March 31, 2009

Summary: "In the seemingly ordinary Amish home of Grace Byler, secrets abound. Why does her mother weep in the night? Why does her father refuse to admit something is dreadfully wrong? Then, in one startling moment, everything Grace assumed she knew is shattered. Her mother's disappearance leaves Grace reeling and unable to keep her betrothal promise to her long-time beau. Left to pick up the pieces of her life, Grace questions all she has been taught about love, family, and commitment. Heather Nelson is an English grad student, stunned by a doctor's diagnosis. Surely fate would not allow her father to lose his only daughter after the death of his wife a few years before. In denial and telling no one she is terminally ill, Heather travels to Lancaster County--the last place she and her mother had visited together. Will Heather find healing for body and spirit? As the lives of four wounded souls begin to weave together like an Amish patchwork quilt, they each discover missing pieces of their life puzzles--and glimpse the merciful and loving hand of God."

Stay-at-home mom Ellie Barton, a twinset and pearls type, thought her life and family (blonde, curly haired little girl and a Ken-doll old-money husband) were perfect—until she sees a racy e-mail intended for her husband. Ellie's marriage isn't the only one going down the tubes; her two witty girlfriends are having pre-nup issues of their own: Mara, a lawyer with commitment issues, is having trouble drafting her own pre-nup, while health nut entrepreneur Jen's pre-nup could cost her her darling startup company. When Ellie's husband throws some punches in the divorce arrangements, the ladies roll out some dirty tricks of their own. . . "

Adaptations

New Book-Based Movies I'm Excited to see...

When books cross over to cinema, there are mixed results. Sometimes the movies are better than the book; sometimes they're a good companion to the book; other times they don't even hold a candle to the book.

I thought The Notebook was a beautiful story on film, but surprisingly less spectacular in written form. Twilight (while I am obviously obsessed with the book) was good as a companion to the book, but does not stand well on it's own. However, many films fall short of translating the magic you find in written form to the supposed magic of the big screen.

I personally enjoy movies as much as books. So, there are many up coming book-based movies I am excited to see!
